Launched in 2009, the Youth Quilt
Block Challenge has become increasingly popular among young quilters in South
Africa. Besides introducing children to the art of quilting, the event aims to
inspire and develop ingenuity in the country’s youth, giving them a new medium
in which to express their creative spirit and improving their workmanship in
the craft in the process.
This year’s event was organized,
administered and co-sponsored by “Kwilts Innie Bos” of the Western Cape and saw
a record number of entries in the three categories: Junior School Children,
Intermediary School Children and Senior School Children. First place in the
Juniors category went to James Neale (mentored by Rosemary Libby) of Alberton, while
first place in the Intermediate category was won by Rebekah Parks (mentored by
Jenny Parks) of Bethulie. Winner of the Seniors category was Heilze Britz
(mentored by Malinda Neto) of Nelspruit.
